P3OS/HeroTech:
Point of sale system
This project began at Parking Panda as a solution to a business need. A point of sale system (P3OS) that allowed parking attendants to scan passes, validate reservations as well as accept and track cash transactions. The product evolved over the years and eventually through an acquisition of Parking Panda by SpotHero, became a changed product under the name HeroTech.
I led the design from its conception all the way through its evolution and eventual end state.

The main challenge for this project has always been speed, accuracy and versatility. We needed to design a product that adapted and met the needs of many different parking operations and clients and solved for the main user need of having an easy to use tool that made it possible to accept wide range of payment/validation options (cash, credit, RFID, and varies pre-paid passes) with minimal issues and without slowing down the parking attendants.
Based on testing, user feedback and other factors such as accessibility requirements, the design changed in various ways over time. The initial choices we made to keep a grid pattern interaction and bottom up secondary actions always performed very well. By keeping the initial interaction patterns, we allowed the user to perform many actions from a singular screen without having to navigate different screens.
Custom iconography was created and evolved based on additional hardware functionality and better visual retention.
The versatility of the hardware and the design allowed us to explore different business and user needs such as a valet service with a seamless experience for both parker and valet staff.
