SteelSeries: Sonar
This was the first project I worked on at SteelSeries, where I was hired as the lead product designer for a groundbreaking new software for gamers—one that would become a first in the industry. Sonar gave gamers complete control over their audio and communication, enhancing and clarifying sounds like footsteps to provide a tangible competitive advantage. What started as a developer build with basic number fields evolved into a fully functional software suite featuring a Parametric Equalizer, audio mixer, spatial audio, AI-driven noise cancellation, over 100 game-specific audio presets, and more.
I led the design from its early conception all the way through its public launch and eventual state at the end of 2023

As this product was brand new, the main challenge was determining how to present advanced audio controls, like Parametric Equalizers, to users and gamers who may not be familiar with tools traditionally used by audiophiles, producers, and sound engineers. We focused on validating design solutions with users and ultimately created a tool that was both intuitive and easy to use while preserving its full functionality. This approach allowed us to optimize the design for our primary users—gamers—so they could take full advantage of the features without needing to be experts, while still maintaining the advanced capabilities for more experienced users.
Based on early user feedback, we implemented tabs to separate each virtual audio device and its associated functions, as well as the audio mixer. This helped organize the information, ensuring that users only interacted with and viewed what was relevant to them at all times.
After the successful launch of the product, we remained focused on its growth, guided by the feedback we received. This led us to explore and launch a mode of the software specifically designed for users who stream content across various platforms. As a result, we also contributed to the launch of a microphone paired with unique software that enhanced the streaming experience.
Each functionality underwent multiple stages of refinement before the public release. As we expanded the testing group, we were able to gather more accurate and insightful feedback.
The users’ goals and needs often required us to simplify certain functions, despite having many advanced features. It was a great challenge to find the right balance.
As an avid audiophile myself, working on and creating this product was a true joy. It not only shaped my own workflow but also improved the experience for millions of gamers around the world.
